All sorts of bugs and ticks: The clockwork creepy crawlies you'll come to love in time

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

Clockwork colours: This life-like meat fly even has the wings and colourful shell found on real flies but is actually made from metal

Anyone swatting these bugs may be in for a surprise - the creepy crawlies are filled with clockwork innards.

Artist Mike Libby, 34, customises real insects and creatures with antique watch parts and electronic components to create new hybrid species.

His 2011 range of beasties includes beetles, butterflies, dragonflies, grasshoppers and even a fearsome-looking cyborg crab.

That's a bit nippy: A crab has been crafted from rusted metal to give it the unique orange colour that it has in the wild

Mike's inspiration for what he calls the Insect Lab came when he found a deceased bug in his garden in Portland, Oregon.

'One day I found a dead intact beetle,' he said.

'I then located an old wristwatch, thinking of how the beetle also operated and looked like a little mechanical device and so decided to combine the two.

'After some time dissecting the beetle and outfitting it with watch parts and gears, I had a convincing little cybernetic sculpture.

'I soon made many more with other found insects and have been exploring and developing the theme ever since.'

Hopping mad: A grasshopper made from watch components adopts a regal pose while right, a close up of a blue butterfly shows how minute and second hands are used for its antennae

Mike has created specimens in many shapes, sizes and colours, with each insect adorned differently to make it truly unique.

He even creates insects to order from his Portland studio and was recently requested to make three clockwork scorpions by a New York stockbroker.

'I get the insects through scientific dealers who provide high quality specimens from all around the world; from Africa, China, New Guinea, Brazil and more,' he says.

Emerging into life: A clockwork butterfly sits on Mr Libby's workshop tables surrounded by pins and tiny watch components as it is constructed for the artist's 2011 collection

Jumping nowhere: This cricket with delicate copper parts giving it a realistic colour is fixed firmly to the ground inside its jar

Ornamental: A bug is housed like an intricate decoration inside a glass bowl. To the right, some of the pocket watches that would have donated parts can be seen

Hairy moment: This clockwork Tarantula appears to have been made from the body of a real spider with small cogs and brass fixings added to its back

Buzzing: This carefully painted bud has four legs and two pairs of wings, but how long will it be before it's time comes?

Each piece takes a number of hours to complete as Mike painstakingly crafts each of the insect;s features.

Once the pieces of art are finished, they can sell for up to $2,000 each. Many of the creatures, such as spiders and scorpions, are so life-like that they could pass at first glance for real animals.

He added: 'Though I do salvage insects that I find right at hand, the occasional bumblebee or dragonfly. Also, people are welcome to send me specimens of their own for a piece.'

As for the mechanical ingredients he uses parts 'mostly from antique pocket watches and wristwatches' and tries to use almost every component 'from the swipe hands and screws to the gears and springs'.

Sting: This life-like scorpion looks so real that it could give people a fright is they spotted it lurking on the mantle piece

Taking off: A dragonfly has delicate wings similar to those found on the real insects. The tiny ornament is small enough to be held in the palm of a hand

MASSACRE AT KIDS' CAMP: More than 30 feared dead as terrorist opens fire at Norwegian summer camp and car bomb devastates Oslo

By MAIL FOREIGN SERVICE

Escape: This footage apparently shows three people swimming away from the island of Utoya which was targeted by a gunman

Teenagers on the Norwegian holiday island of Utoya had to 'swim for their lives' and hide in trees when a gunman fired indiscriminately at them.

Around 700 had gathered on the island for a meeting of the youth wing of the ruling Labour party.

Witnesses said the man in police uniform who opened fire beckoned several young people over before shooting at them. He told them to 'come here'.

Crime scene: The white van was believed to have been driven onto the island of Utoya by the gunman who then opened fire on groups of children attending a summer camp

Other witnesses said they heard him saying: 'This is just the beginning.'

It came as Norway succumbed to a double attack in what is being described as the worst atrocity it has faced since the Second World War.

Terrorists are believed to be responsible for a massive car blast at a government office block in the capital Oslo which took place earlier on in the day.

Camp: A number of children were gunned down in the attack on Utoya island

One teenager who was caught up in the island attack said: 'Suddenly, we heard lots of shooting. People had to run and hide. We have been told to get off the island.'

A party official said: 'There has been a shootout. Many people are shot. Based on what I have seen, at least four people are shot and killed. Now it’s complete panic and we swim off to get to safety.'

Bjorn Jarle Røberg-Larsen, of the Labour party, spoke to young people on Utoya by phone.

'They say that at least one person wearing a police-like uniform was firing shots with a handgun,' he said.

He said the people he spoke to were hiding and dared not speak on the phone any more for fear of being discovered.

'Young people have to swim in panic, and it is far to the mainland from Utoya,' he said. 'Others are hiding. Those I spoke with were terrified.'

Targeted: Hundreds of children were at a summer camp, which is held every year (as pictured here) on the island of Utoya

A Twitter user going by the name zhalli1 posted a message on the website saying: 'I'm safe. We've hidden in a tree. One of us is shot twice in the foot.'

Police stormtroopers landed on the island by helicopter as the shooting continued and sealed off the area but ambulances were unable to reach the scene immediately.

Fredrik Walløe, a London-based Norwegian journalist, tweeted: 'A Sea King helicopter carrying medics has reached the island, but can't land because of continued gunfire.'

Locals were urged to help those fleeing the island.

As sales of M&S Brazilians soar, which knicker tribe are you?

By CLAUDIA CONNELL

Last week, Marks & Spencer reported a 64 per cent rise in sales of Brazilian knickers as women fall over themselves to buy them. But if you’re not brave enough to brazen it out in Brazilians, there are plenty of underwear types to try. Claudia Connell gives you the bottom line on today’s knicker tribes...

BRAZILIAN KNICKERS

What are they? Inspired by swimwear seen on the beaches of Rio, these knickers give you good coverage at the front and a high cut at the back with a soft, non-elasticated leg so the fabric doesn’t show through clothes.

Worn by: Older women who should have more sense. Lured in by those three-for-£10 offers at M&S and pictures of the gorgeous Brazilian supermodel Ana Beatriz Barros wearing them, it’s only when they get their purchases home that they realise that these knickers look good only on Brazilian supermodels.

GREY GRANNIES

What are they? Comfort knickers. The underwear equivalent of a big bowl of fluffy mashed potato with melted butter. They come up to your armpits and (unlike the thong) leave everything to the imagination.

These tatty old faithfuls lie forlornly at the bottom of the laundry basket just waiting to be loved and worn. Once brilliant white, they’ve been put in with the coloured items a few too many times.

Worn by: Every woman at some point or other but strictly only on days when she can be sure of a) never getting run over, and b) never being seduced by a handsome man. These knickers are for her eyes only.

THONGS AND STRINGS

What are they? Teeny, tiny little triangles of fabric that don’t flatter anyone over a size  8. As a general rule, the less there is of them, the more you pay. They provide (just) enough to cover your modesty at the front while letting it all hang out behind.

Worn by: Glamour models, porn stars, reality TV stars and Essex girls.

FRENCH KNICKERS

What are they? Also called ‘cami-knickers’, these saucy creations usually come in silk and satin with a lace trim. Worn over the course of a day, they build up enough static friction to power a small car. Should never be paraded anywhere near a naked flame.

Worn by: Nurses in Carry On films, au pairs in dated TV sitcoms and French maids who find themselves locked in bedrooms with vicars in Seventies farces. Surely nobody in the real world wears them, do they?

CONTROL PANTS, AKA BRIDGET JONES PANTS

What are they? A modern day miracle and the greatest invention since the wheel.

These re-inforced super-pants can make you a dress size smaller, delivering the equivalent of a tummy tuck and a bum lift all in one go.

Worn by: Anybody having a fat day or wanting to ensure a perfect silhouette when they pour themselves into a particularly fitted outfit. And larger ladies needn’t be ashamed — even skinnies like Gwyneth Paltrow have confessed to never walking a red carpet without first donning a pair of Spanx.

NOVELTY KNICKERS

What are they? They tend to come in packs of five and are often given as ‘wacky’ gifts at hen parties. Ones with the days of the week on are particular favourites, but designs with ‘Little Miss Naughty’ or pictures of cartoon characters such as Hello Kitty are also widely available.

Worn by: The immature, highly annoying office-joker type. The sort who’s always first up to sing karaoke at the office Christmas party.

BOY SHORTS

What are they? Men’s underwear for women. Sporty and practical, they come down to the top of the thighs, cover the buttocks and sit under the belly button.
Worn by: PE mistresses, sporty, no-nonsense types who can’t be doing with the fuss of frills, lace and high cuts.

BIKINI BRIEFS

What are they? Plain, simple knickers that are scant enough to be sexy but substantial enough to not feel like your bottom is falling out of its world. Usually worn in plain white and bought in multi-packs.

Worn by: Students, office workers and busy mums who pick them up in supermarkets along with a loaf of bread and a box of Tetley.
